Dick’s Sporting Goods wasn’t always a household name in sporting goods retail. In fact, our humble beginnings trace back to 1948, when Dick Stack—just an 18-year-old kid then—dreamt of starting a bait and tackle shop. His unwavering dedication, coupled with an entrepreneurial spirit, gradually propelled us to the retail powerhouse we are today.

From a small bait shop to an industry leader

In 1948, as a young man, Dick Stack was pursuing his dream of playing professional baseball when an injury derailed his athletic aspirations. But his passion for sports continued burning bright. That same year, Dick and his father Richard opened a small bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton, NY – naming it after Dick himself.

Our story had humble beginnings. In those early days Dick Stack could often be found behind the counter himself, chatting with customers and providing tips on the local fishing spots. But his tireless work ethic, innovative spirit and obsession with serving fellow sports enthusiasts planted the seeds for major growth in the decades that followed.

Key milestones over the years included opening our first store outside of Binghamton in the 1960s, going public in 2002, and acquiring well-known chains like Galyan’s and Chick’s in 2004 to accelerate our expansion. Today, Dick’s Sporting Goods operates over 700 stores in nearly every U.S. state, along with robust eCommerce sites and mobile apps empowering athletes to shop with us anytime, anywhere.
